Lower Back Pain And The Adrenal Glands

Today a friend of mine called because she was having lower back pain. Of course, it was the usual culprit — stress.

What happens is that stress causes a strain on the adrenal glands. The stress can be from diet, emotions, physical over-exertion, chemicals and more.

The adrenal glands handle stress
The adrenal glands are natures answer to stress, and they do a good job at it for how we evolved. Unfortunately, the stress that ancient people faced was about a thousand times less than what we experience in modern life. Oh, the wild animal is more likely to kill, but your body’s reaction is the same as when you have a near miss on the freeway, or from eating a piece of cake. That spinning class isn’t natural either, more like being chased by wild animals than exercise.

Adrenal glands get preferential treatment
The point is that the adrenals take a hard hit and grow weak. Thing is, the same nutrients the adrenals need are also needed by your ligaments and tendons to keep them strong. The adrenals are much more important, so the body diverts the nutrients to them to keep you running.

The lower back supports the entire body
The sacroiliac joint is what supports the weight of the entire upper body. Those ligaments tend to be the first to go since they bear the most weight.

Addiction
My friend had been on a crazy tour, traveling, eating what was available, and having her sugar addiction come back with a vengeance. Don’t worry, we all have that very same addiction. Most addiction is sugar addiction.

Unfortunately, there’s not much that can be done for lower back pain until the adrenal glands are taken care of. It can be quick too.

Herbs for the adrenal glands
Fortunately, she has access to inexpensive acupuncture. Plus a good Chinese Herb shop near by.

Herbs are the best for quick lower back pain relief. The adrenal fatigue herbs listed are the ones that are the fastest working I’ve ever seen or experienced. There are two of them, licorice and Siberian Ginseng. They work great together, though sometimes the Ginseng can be too much for women, like with my friend. Astragalus is a good substitution, but it might not work as fast.

You just have to say “NO”
I told my friend that if people knew as deeply how bad sugar is for them, if they knew the physiology of what happens, that they wouldn’t eat it. It’s become a bit of a slogan, but sugar really is white death, it’s just slow so you don’t notice so much.

Health starts with adrenal health
Most major illnesses start from adrenal fatigue. Well, it goes deeper than that, but brain chemistry and behaviour is a subject I haven’t gotten into yet. But, things like heart disease, cancer, depression, gastrointestinal issues, diabetes and more can be traced biochemically traced back to the adrenal glands. Even lower back pain.

The main thing I want to do is to share information on health and healing so that people can take action to heal themselves using natural techniques. I will talk about biochemistry relating that to what is needed to obtain optimum health. There will be information about the physical structure of the body and how to keep that aligned and functioning well. A major part of yoga has to do with health, so information about yogic techniques will be included. Mental and emotional health are important for the health of the body/mind, so articles about these topics will be included. And, there will be an occasional article about me and what I am up to. Hopefully I can relate that back to some health issue as well. The title Self Adjusting Technique comes from my technique for self-adjusting the structural part of the body, that is adjusting the body's various vertebrae and joints. For this blog it will include the idea of how to adjust health issues for yourself and those you care about. With a little knowledge there is a lot people can do to help heal themselves and stay healthy. I want to explain complex information about the body in a way that is easy to understand and useful. The comments section will help in that goal as people can ask for clarification if there is something they don't understand.     What can a person do as far as taking herbs with anti-depressant medications? My psych doctor says that mixing herbs with these meds is dangerous. What’s your take on this? I once took black cohosh, forgetting that I was taking Paxil. Within a couple of hours, I was sick to my stomach and vomited. From that time onward, I’ve been quite leary about using herbs because of taking Paxil and Nortriptyline, even though I take small doses. I sure wouldn’t want to get sick again. I’ve had a lot of low back pain in my lifetime, for approximately 25 years. I have spent lots of money on the chiropractor. Finally now that I’m older I don’t have the stress of a full-time job and children. It seems my back has come a long way since not working full-time for 5 years.

  • Sugar is definitely the enemy. Dietitians always try to convince people that sugar and salt are both acquired tastes – but that advice is really hard to follow, particularly for those with a sweet tooth. The tongue is the biggest culprit 🙂

    Hi!

    Very interesting. I have recently heard similar information about your body canabalizing itself from stress and lack of food and vitamins …all due to stress.

    What about dextroamphetamines?

    I take 15-20mgs. per day to get myself focused.
    I think the long term effects may be adrenal fatigue, I was told.
    Any alternative suggestions? I am aware of the effects of sugar, and yeast products that turn into sugar in your body. I avoid sugar, only raw unprocessed honey in Kifer. …….and I love chocolat.
    When I have bread I have rye bread with no flour and a sourdough starter.
    It’s Russian or Luthuanian made. What can I do for counteracting any stress or adrenal fatigue?

    For sugar cravings Garlic is great, since a lot of sugar cravings have to do with parasites in the body. I am slowly getting better. I had 55 symptoms down to 22. I also have less stress now I have a cleaning lady:) The site looks great!

    That’s great Christl. Parasites put a huge load on the system, especially dealing with their waist products. Yuck! Another herb that works really well is Black Walnut tincture. Not the ones at the health food store, get a good one like Mediherb — cheaper per ml too, though you won’t need a full bottle.

    The main thing to be careful of when doing a parasite cleanse is a reaction they body can have from the initial die off. Flu like symptoms, tired etc. Just stop for a day and possibly reduce dosage for awhile. Usually happens on the third day.

    Strong adrenal glands will keep you focused like you wouldn’t believe. Here’s a good adrenal fatigue protocol. Brain chemistry is disturbed as well and will need to be balanced. Relaxing herbs will help with that and the stress you mention.

    Unfortunately, all ground up grains react the same way — fast release of sugar into the blood. Honey is only a little worse with about the same glycemic load as white sugar.

    I didn’t know that about dietitians, weird way to think. How do they think our ancient ancestors ate enough fruit to survive the winter? Only the sweet tooth survived.

    I agree with your doctor. The best way to do it is to get off the antidepressants first. Almost impossible I know, and not something I’m telling you to do — I leave that to you and your doctor. There are ways to get off antidepressants, but care is required, monitoring by someone like my psychiatrist friend is ideal, she knows all the tricks. Eat right, plenty of sleep in a pitch dark room, lots of supplements, right exercise — get really healthy. Then you might consider weaning off them.
